The University of Ilorin Zoological garden was first established as biological garden at the mini-campus of the University in 1975 and upgraded to zoological garden in 1985 to complement the University’s Biological Sciences Departments in teaching and research. The zoo is located approximately between Latitude 8 ° 48ꞌ17ꞌꞌ N and Longitude 4 ° 63ꞌ82ꞌꞌ E at the main gate of the University as children playgrounds. A major attraction to the zoo is the 150meters long and 45meters high suspended canopy walkway, which has continued to draw visitors to the zoo. The fact that most of the forest vegetation has been left undisturbed and the presence of a stream which flows through the zoo creates a serene and near natural environment which makes the zoo unique.
The Unilorin Zoological Garden boasts an impressive variety of wildlife, housing 45 different species. The zoo is home to over 110 pigeons, 20 peacocks, and rare birds like the Fish Eagle and Marabou Stork. Mammalian species include majestic predators like lions, leopards, and hyenas, alongside primates such as baboons, green monkeys, and chimpanzees. Reptilian inhabitants feature the Nile crocodile, python, and cobra, enriching the biodiversity of the garden. Each species contributes to the zoo’s mission of conservation, education, and ecological awareness.
